The Rho Kappa Zeta Chapter was chartered out of the desire to recruit and retain the many "floating" Zetas living in and around the St. Andrews, North Columbia and West Columbia areas. In June of 1999 Dr. Constance Hendricks, Latorsha Murray, and Triumphant member Brenda Washington* met and discussed this idea. They formed a committee and began to work. The first meeting was held at the St. Andrews Branch of the Richland County Public Library. Mildred Knightner and triumphant member Alice Holt (Triumphant) joined the committee. Soon, Angela Cornish (Hartwell), Ericka Roberson (Hursey), Christel Clark, Shirley Brown and Wanda Wylie joined their efforts. These 10 women received their charter on September 25, 1999.
Since chartering, Rho Kappa Zeta Chapter has upheld the principles of the organization by giving scholarships, adopting a local elementary school, adopting an elder care facility, and other volunteer opportunities in the community. The chapter has won numerous awards on all levels of the organization to include a national service award (2007) South Carolina Chapter of the Year (2005) and Midland 2 Model Chapter of the Year (2018).
The chapter has women who have not only served the midlands community, but Zeta as a whole. The co-developer of the Sorority’s national service program – Zetas Helping Other People Excel is charter member Dr. Constance S. Hendricks. Dr. Hendricks has also served as the South Central Regional Director. Other national officers that have been a part of the chapter are Dr. Denisha Hendricks who served as the Chair of the International Board of Directors. Charter member Latorsha Murray is the 11th South Carolina State Director and currently a national appointee working in the Office of Training and Development and Lanita Jones is a national appointee working on the International President’s administrative team.
The chapter has grown exponentially in the last few years. There are currently over 70 members. Among these members are national, regional, and state officers. We have 2 Life Members, and 2 Crystal Doves (50 Years of Service).
